totale pizza, motorino pizza, etc – real italiano pizza in the ‘hood ♥♥♥ ♥♥♥ ♥♥♥

pizza made by italians yum!

mototina pizza - Colatura Di Alici - cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, white anchovies, parsley

in recent months there seems to be a wave of young italians (like italian ppl from italy not jersey shore italian-americans) opening small pizza shops in the city serving, allegedly, pizza how they make it in italia. (sidenote: i don’t really know who owns the places, just appears that there are at least some italians from italia working in these places which is a good move considering how americans fetishize anything italiano.)

the buzzwords du jour that the newest ones are using is “napoletana”. whether its really how they make pies in naples, i do not know, but i freakin love ♥♥♥ these places! altho, i lament that in the US they can’t get the better quality ingredients like those that can be had by anyone in italia. but, these peeps really try and make it work as tim gunn would say.

these are my faves, in order of favorite:

  1. ♥♥♥ totale pizza, st. marks place btwn 2nd and 3rd aves
i eat here a few times a week. my favorite is the Totale pecorino – romano red onions, pine nuts and rosemary. giving credit where credit is due, i was introduced to this place and this exact pizza by my rockstar friend maura kennedy.
  2. ♥♥ cacio e vino, 2nd ave btwn 4th and 5th streets
they’ve been here for a few years and i know it’s owned and run by a sicilian. i’ve been a regular here for years. it’s not only pizza but more. my fav pie is the Bianca al Crudo – Fresh mozzarella, arugula, prosciutto, shaved parmigiano cheese. get it. you can thank me later.
  3. ♥ motorino pizza, e 12th street bten 1st and 2nd aves
see photo above. the anchovies are not overpowering but excellent. delightful. get it.

i noticed another place on 1st ave @ 10th street -ish i’ll have to look into too. and i heard about another somewhere near delancy…

oh and i’ve been meaning to check out Ballaró Caffé Prosciutteria across the street from cacio e vino. i think it’s owned by the guy who owns cacio e vino.
